Promoting the forum

Page 1 of 2Next

It occurs to me that now might be a good time to promote the forum. Traffic seems a bit thin. Three ideas.

  1. Prevail upon Hugh to update the thirdmanifesto site. Change the links to point to the forum, but also add a bit of hype. Add a news item, some words like "we have a brand new forum courtesy of etc".
  2. Email all the current and previous subscribers to the list (if not already done).
  3. Make a few postings to other forums eg LTU comes to mind, but most forums allow for announcements of this kind. Others would know better than I which to choose.

Traffic's probably about the same volume as it was before moving to the Web forum, but I appreciate your points.

So, yes, Hugh, could you update the forum references on thethirdmanifesto.com Web site?

I'm not going to email past subscribers to the list. That would be an inappropriate use of their emails and under GDPR rules, possibly illegal -- a violation of Article 7(3), as unsubscribing is an indication of opting out. All current subscribers have received the email forum posts about moving to this Web forum.

I certainly encourage posting links to this forum elsewhere.

I'm reasonably confident that data provided by an individual who subscribes to a non-commercial forum run privately by an individual (not an organisation) would not be subject to GDPR rules. So:

  • If that is so, then a single carefully worded notification of the forum's existence is perfectly in order. You'll know if you've crossed a line by the responses you get (if any).
  • Otherwise the data you already hold related to a previous subscription was not gathered under those rules. You could legitimately email each previous subscriber asking them whether they would like their data transferred to the new forum, or deleted.

Either way, I don't think you can argue that you can't or mustn't, only that you don't want to.

I'm quite certain the opposite is the case. It would be difficult to argue that I am exempt under item 2(c) (is TTM a "purely personal or household activity"?), and I'm not inclined to test it for the sake of attempting to woo participants who already indicated by unsubscribing, possibly years ago, that they did not wish to receive further communications about or from TTM.

Re point 1, I've added the link, replacing what I had concerning the old email forum.  I'm not sure about adding "hype" etc. but am open to suggestions.

I notice you've linked to https://forum.thethirdmanifesto.com/forum/subscriptions/, the specific page that allows a user to control whether or not he/she gets email notifications for new posts.

I suggest just linking to https://forum.thethirdmanifesto.com/, as it clearly indicates in a yellow banner that you need to sign up to post, and lets prospective participants browse the public posts before joining.

Excellent, but it can be even simpler. You're showing the link as https://forum.thethirdmanifesto.com/forum. The forum software will automatically redirect to that. You can simply give the URL as https://forum.thethirdmanifesto.com

Linking to archive entries is relatively useless if most people aren't subscribed.

Bonus question : if I ever want to link to an old post, can I link directly to a particular post instead of just to the start of the thread (and require the reader to scan sequentially trough you know how many posts could be involved) ?

Correct. By "posting links", I meant generally posting the https://forum.thethirdmanifesto.com URL elsewhere, not necessarily referencing specific posts.
