Per the usual UK undergraduate grading scales, I give both a D -- adequate, though I was initially tempted to give both a D- for barely adequate, but made allowance for the fact that both are obviously early in their 1st year of studies.

Next floor down is F inadequate.

A C would be good, which neither are.
